Book Review: Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder

shelf-159852__180Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder

The synopsis reads about the female lead character being kidnapped from Ixia at a young age and finding out that she has magical powers. She has been freed and is returning home to Sitia after more than a decade. Her magical powers are out of control and since she was 6 years old when she was kidnapped she does not know her home or her family. She is to train at a magic school.

Great sounds interesting I thought when I picked it up, a mix between Harry Potter and The Magicians.

However, as the novel progresses it is less about her training and honing her magical abilities by her mentor the Master Magician but rather stopping a evil rogue magician from killing girls and stealing their souls.

I was surprised that I like the twists and turns in the story. It was a quick read and kept me interested throughout. The lead female, Yelena is strong, determined, kicks ass and people listen and respect her. She has a love interest, Valek, who is not welcomed in Sitia. I really liked how she and him were partners throughout the story, how he valued her opinions and let her fight her own battles.

There is danger, some suspense, fighting, mystical creatures, adversaries and split life alternating decisions to be made throughout.

Overall a well written novel with a strong plot and characters. This is part of a series, am not to sure if I am interested enough to read the next one but I did enjoy this novel even as a stand alone work by Snyder.

4/5 stars

Has anyone read other novels by this author? Would you recommend this series?

Happy Reading 🙂
